How Much Does Roof Repair Cost in New Jersey?
Most roof repairs in New Jersey cost $400 to $1,900. That range comes from a 2026 national cost guide that prices repairs by state. It puts a minor repair here at $400 to $1,000 and a bigger one at $1,300 to $1,900.
A second national guide puts the typical repair at $395 to $1,967, and most homeowners pay about $1,174. Simple fixes start near $150 in that guide. Structural damage can push a repair to $8,000.
These are market numbers, not our price list. Each roof repair is priced by the problem: the leak, the roof material, the pitch and the wood underneath.
What do common roof repairs cost in New Jersey?
The state-by-state guide splits each kind of damage into a minor and a major repair. These are its 2026 ranges.
| Damage | Minor repair | Major repair |
|---|---|---|
| Leaks | $200 to $800 | $1,200 to $2,500 |
| Wind | $250 to $700 | $900 to $1,500 |
| Hail | $600 to $1,400 | $2,500 to $6,500 and up |
| Tree limb or other impact | $900 to $2,500 | $2,500 to $6,500 and up |
| Pipe boots and vent collars | $150 to $300 | $400 to $700 |
The same guide prices single jobs too:
- A few missing asphalt shingles: $150 to $350
- Flashing resealed at a chimney or vent: $200 to $600
- A leak in a roof valley: $600 to $1,400
- Rotted or broken roof decking: $700 to $2,500 and up per area
The second guide puts flashing repair at $200 to $500 and a leaking roof at $360 to $1,550. Water in the wood is the big jump in price. Once water damages the roof deck, a third national guide puts the repair at $1,500 to $3,000.
Why does the same repair cost more on one roof than another?
The roof material comes first. The second guide lists these average repair costs by material:
- Flat roof: $400
- Wood shake: $750
- Asphalt shingles: $975
- Metal: $1,700
Pitch and access move the price too. The state-by-state guide says costs rise on steep or hard-to-reach roofs. A flat roof cost guide adds the number of stories.
Labor is a big share of any repair. The state-by-state guide puts roofers at $50 to $120 an hour each. The flat roof guide says labor is about 70 percent of a flat roof repair.
Location counts as well. The state-by-state guide says to expect higher prices in coastal and Northeast states. New Jersey sits near the top of its table.
What does a flat roof repair cost?
Water drains slowly off a flat roof, and leaks often start at a seam or a hole in the membrane. The flat roof guide calls seams the weakest part of single-ply membranes like TPO and EPDM.
That guide puts the average flat roof repair at $700, with most between $300 and $1,100. A small patch can run as little as $150, and large repairs reach $4,000. Its ranges for common flat roof problems:
- Seam repair: $200 to $1,000
- Membrane puncture: $250 to $1,750
- Flashing on a flat roof: $200 to $750
- Drain repair: $70 to $500
- Ponding water: $70 to $750 (the cause sets the price)
Patching makes sense while the rest of the membrane is sound. The same guide puts a full flat roof replacement at about $8,000 on average. When the whole membrane is worn out, the question moves to new flat roofing.
When does a roof repair stop making sense?
The third guide weighs two things: the size of the bill and the age of the roof. Past $3,000 in repairs, it says a roof replacement may be worth a look. It favors repair when the roof is under 15 years old and the damage is minor.
Age matters because shingles wear out. The second guide puts three-tab shingles at about 20 years and architectural shingles at about 30. The third guide says roofs over 20 years old often need frequent repairs.
Spread matters too. When damage covers large sections of the roof, the third guide says a full replacement is likely needed. For the other side of that math, see what a new roof costs in New Jersey.
What should you check after a storm?
On September 1, 2021, the remnants of Ida dropped an EF-3 tornado in Gloucester County. The National Weather Service tracked it through Mullica Hill toward Deptford, and some homes on its path lost roofs. Most storms do far less, but wind can still lift shingles and loosen flashing.
After a storm, start from the ground:
- Stay off the roof. Look from the yard, with binoculars if you have them.
- Look for missing or lifted shingles and bent flashing.
- Check the gutters for piles of shingle grit.
- In the attic, look for wet wood or damp insulation.
- Check top-floor ceilings for new stains.
If you find damage, New Jersey’s Department of Banking and Insurance lists the next steps. Take pictures of it and report the loss to your insurer right away. Cover openings in the roof with plywood or plastic, or call a contractor if that is unsafe. Keep receipts for any repairs.
