When is gutter replacement the better call?

Gutter repair fits when one spot is the problem. A corner can start to drip, or a hanger can work loose. A downspout can also come apart at a joint. We fix that piece and leave the rest of the gutter in place.

Gutter replacement makes more sense when the problems run the length of the house. Watch for gutters that sag between hangers or pull away from the fascia, the board they hang on. Holes and old patches along a run point the same way.

Some signs show up on the house itself. Peeling paint on the fascia or streaks down the siding mean water is getting behind or over the gutter. At the estimate visit, we tell you which one your house needs.

What happens during gutter installation

On a gutter replacement, the old gutters and downspouts come down first. That opens up the fascia board behind them. A soft or rotted fascia board should be repaired before a new gutter hangs on it.

The new gutters are fastened to the fascia with hangers along each run. Each run gets a slight pitch toward its downspout, so water moves along and drains out. Then the downspouts go up, set to carry the water away from the foundation.

With a roof replacement, new gutters are easy to plan in. The drip edge is the metal strip at the roof edge that steers water into the gutter. A new drip edge and new gutters can be fitted to each other. Our work runs from the first inspection to the final cleanup.

Gutters and downspouts for South Jersey rain

NOAA's climate normals put yearly rain and melted snow at about 46 to 48 inches at stations around Clayton. One inch of rain on 1,000 square feet of roof is about 620 gallons of water. Your gutters catch that water and hand it to the downspouts.

Water that spills from a clogged or broken gutter lands right next to the house. So does water from a downspout that stops at the corner of the foundation. That water can soak into a basement or crawl space. We set each downspout so the water runs out and away from the house.

Winter brings its own load. The same NOAA normals show about 12 to 22 inches of snow a year around Clayton. Snow and ice can fill a gutter and pull on its hangers. A gutter that sags after a winter storm is worth a look before spring rain arrives.

FAQ

Gutters Questions, Answered

Common questions about gutters around Clayton and the rest of South Jersey. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (856) 449-4674

How much does gutter installation cost?
The total length of gutter on the house drives most of the price. The number of downspouts and corners matters, and so does the height of the roof edge. Taking down old gutters adds to the job. We look at the house, then email you a detailed free estimate.
Do I need a permit for new gutters in New Jersey?
The state's Uniform Construction Code lists work on exterior gutters and leaders as ordinary maintenance. Leaders are what the code calls downspouts. Ordinary maintenance needs no permit, and the town does not need notice of it. Your township construction office can answer questions about your property.
What is the difference between seamless and sectional gutters?
Sectional gutters come in set lengths that are joined along the run. Seamless gutters are formed at the house from a metal coil, so joints sit only at corners and downspout outlets. Every joint is a place a leak can start. At the free estimate, we go over the gutter choices for your house.
Should I replace my gutters when I get a new roof?
If your gutters are old or sagging, the roof job is a good time to replace them. The roof edge and the gutters get done together, and one estimate covers both. If the roof only needs a roof repair, new gutters can still go up on their own.
Why does water still reach my basement when I have gutters?
Gutters that drain in the wrong place are a common cause. A clogged gutter spills over the front, and a short downspout empties right at the foundation. A gutter pitched the wrong way can hold water until it overflows. During a hard rain, watch where the water lands, and tell us what you see.
Do you install gutters outside Clayton?
Yes. We work across Gloucester County and Camden County, plus the near side of Salem County and Burlington County. The Vineland side of Cumberland County is in our area too, and our service area page names the towns. We also take jobs across the river in Pennsylvania.
