Deptford's population took off after World War II, the township's history says. Woodbury Gardens, Hammond Heights, Lake Tract and Cooper Village all grew then. Oak Valley went up on the site of the old Oak Valley Country Club. Its homes date to the late 1950s and early 1960s.
Today Deptford has the third most people of any town in Gloucester County: 31,977 in the 2020 Census. Nearly three in four homes are detached single-family houses, and more than one in four went up before 1960. New homes come slowly: the Census Bureau counted 26 permitted in Deptford in 2025.
So most roof work in Deptford is on houses that already stand. A roof replacement there starts with the tear-off. With the old layers gone, we check the roof deck and replace decking that has gone soft.
Deptford Township's construction office handles permits and inspections under New Jersey's Uniform Construction Code. That state code lists some exterior work as ordinary maintenance, which needs no permit and no notice. Replacing the roofing on a detached one- or two-family house is on that list.

On September 1, 2021, an EF-3 tornado from the remnants of Ida crossed Gloucester County. The National Weather Service traced its path from Harrisonville toward Deptford, where it lifted. A few homes in Wenonah, next to Deptford, lost roofs along the way.
Smaller storms do damage too. Nor'easters come most often from October to April, the state climatologist at Rutgers reports. Wind lifts shingle tabs and works flashing loose around chimneys and vents, and then rain finds the gap.
After a storm, look for shingle pieces in the yard or bare spots on the roof. A new stain on an upstairs ceiling means water got in. Call or text us, and our team will come look at the damage.
The township lists many sections, including Almonesson, Jericho, New Sharon and Good Intent. Westville Grove and Blackwood Terrace are part of Deptford too. Big Timber Creek forms its Camden County edge.
Almonesson dates to 1789, and its old mill pond was renamed Lake Almonesson. New Sharon sits near Tanyard Road and Delsea Drive. Route 55 and Route 42 cross the township as well.
