When is it time for replacement windows?

Drafts are often the first sign. On a cold night, you can feel the chill when you sit near an old window. Fog or water between the panes means the seal around the glass has failed. Sashes that stick, or that will not stay open, are another sign.

Check the sills on wood windows too. Soft or rotted wood there can let water into the wall below. When several windows show these signs, window replacement usually makes more sense than one fix at a time.

Window repairs make sense when the frame is sound and one part has failed, like the glass. Our team looks at each window during the free estimate. The detailed estimate lists the work we recommend and the price.

Window installation and energy efficiency in South Jersey

South Jersey homes run the heat in winter and the air conditioning in summer. So a window here has to slow heat loss and hold back summer sun. The NFRC label on new glass lists the ratings for both. For the U-factor, which shows how fast heat escapes, a lower number is better.

New Jersey's rehabilitation code sets a maximum U-factor for windows and skylights that are installed or replaced. The federal ENERGY STAR program sets its own levels for each climate zone. It says windows with its label can cut household energy bills by up to 13 percent on average. That figure is for homes replacing single-pane windows.

ENERGY STAR also notes that even good windows can be drafty when they are poorly installed. Each replacement window is made to fit its opening, then set level and fastened. The gap between the window and the framing gets insulated and sealed. On the outside, flashing and trim steer rain away from the wall.

Skylight installation and skylight replacement

A skylight brings daylight into a room that wall windows cannot reach. We install new skylights and replace old ones that leak or have cloudy glass. A skylight leak often starts at the flashing, the metal that seals the skylight into the roof.

Skylight flashing ties into the roof covering around it. So a roof replacement is a good time to swap an old skylight. The roofing around it comes off anyway.

A new skylight means cutting a new opening in the roof. Skylights are not named on the state's list of ordinary maintenance, the work that needs no permit. If the opening means cutting a rafter, that is structural work. Your township construction office tells you whether the job needs a permit.

FAQ

Windows Questions, Answered

Common questions about windows around Clayton and the rest of South Jersey. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (856) 449-4674

How much does window replacement cost?
The number and size of the windows drive most of the price, along with the window style. Rotted framing found when old windows come out also adds to the job. If you want new exterior doors too, the same estimate can cover them. We look at the job in person, then email you a free written estimate.
Do I need a permit to replace windows in New Jersey?
Usually not, when the new window goes in the same opening. The state's Uniform Construction Code calls that ordinary maintenance, with no permit and no notice to the town. Making an opening bigger, or cutting a new one, falls outside that rule. Your township construction office can confirm what applies to your house.
What is the difference between replacement windows and new construction windows?
A replacement window is made to fit an existing opening, so the siding around it can usually stay. A new construction window has a nailing fin that fastens to the wall framing. It goes in where the wall is open, like a new home or a house getting new siding. We install both kinds.
Can I replace a bedroom window that is an escape route?
Yes. State code allows it in the same opening if the new window does not shrink the clear opening. If the opening size changes, at least one bedroom window must open, with a sill no higher than 44 inches. That window also needs an opening of at least 5.7 square feet.
Why is there fog between the panes of my window?
Double-pane glass has a sealed space between the two panes. When that seal fails, moist air gets in and fogs the glass between the panes. You cannot wipe that fog off. Some windows can take new glass alone, and others are better replaced whole.
Do you replace windows outside Clayton?
Yes. Our service area covers Gloucester County and Camden County, with Clayton at the center. The Vineland side of Cumberland County and the near side of Salem County and Burlington County are in it too. We also take jobs across the river in Pennsylvania.
