Which vinyl siding profile fits your house?

Vinyl siding comes in several profiles. Horizontal lap panels are molded to look like one to three boards stacked. Dutch lap adds a beveled groove along each course for a deeper shadow line. Board and batten runs up and down the wall, and shake styles copy the look of cedar.

Vinyl comes from the factory in its finished color, smooth or with a wood-grain texture. Insulated vinyl siding adds rigid foam behind each panel. It counts as continuous insulation, with an R-value of at least 2.0. That means one unbroken layer across the outside of the wall, studs included.

The foam makes each panel thicker. The industry's installation manual notes that trim around windows and doors may need building out to match. If you would rather have a heavy board that takes paint, look at fiber cement siding.

How vinyl siding installation works on a South Jersey home

Vinyl siding grows and shrinks with the temperature. The installation manual says a panel 12 and a half feet long can move half an inch or more. New Jersey runs hot and cold. The state climatologist at Rutgers reports every weather station in the state has hit 100 degrees and 0 degrees.

So vinyl siding has to hang loose enough to slide. Each nail goes in the center of its slot, with about a dime's thickness of space under the head. Panels stop at least a quarter inch short of corner posts and trim. We hang each panel the way its maker's instructions call for.

Vinyl siding sheds most of the rain, and some water still gets behind it. That is why it goes over house wrap, with flashing at windows and doors. Each panel locks onto the row below, and the ends overlap about an inch. Laps point away from entrances, so the seams show less where people walk up.

When does vinyl siding need replacement?

Wavy or buckled vinyl siding often points back to how it was hung. Nails driven tight pin the panel in place, and the installation manual warns it will buckle as temperatures change. Panels cut too long for the trim bow the same way. Nails driven through the face of a panel leave ripples.

Loose or missing panels tend to show up after a windstorm. A panel that never fully locked onto the row below can blow off in a gust. In hard cold, vinyl gets stiff, and a ball or a stone thrown by a mower can crack it. Heat from a grill parked too close can warp a panel.

One damaged panel can be swapped out on its own with a zip tool. When the problems run across whole walls, vinyl siding replacement makes more sense. Rotten wood under the old siding gets replaced first, because vinyl should not cover rot. Gutters and downspouts come down for re-siding, so it is a good time to replace worn gutters.

FAQ

Vinyl Siding Questions, Answered

Common questions about vinyl siding around Clayton and the rest of South Jersey. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (856) 449-4674

How much does vinyl siding cost?
House size and the number of stories drive most of the price. Insulated vinyl costs more than standard panels, and rotten sheathing adds repair work. We look at the house, then email you a detailed free estimate. Our guide to siding costs in New Jersey lays out market numbers.
Can new vinyl siding go over my old siding?
Sometimes, if the old siding is flat and sound. The installation manual has loose boards nailed down and rotten ones replaced first. Asbestos siding is a regulated material, so ask the township construction office before anything covers it. We check your walls at the free estimate and tell you which way your house needs.
Does vinyl siding replacement need a permit in New Jersey?
No, not on a one- or two-family home. The state construction code lists siding repair and replacement there as ordinary maintenance, with no permit or notice required. Polypropylene siding, a different plastic, is the exception. Your township construction office has the final word on your house.
Will vinyl siding hold up to strong wind?
Siding in the industry's testing program carries a design pressure rating for wind on its label. The installation manual says it must be hung in a way that lets it meet that rating. That matters in New Jersey, where few winters pass without at least one strong coastal storm.
Can vinyl siding be installed in the winter?
Yes, with a few changes for the cold. Below 40 degrees, the installation manual calls for a three-eighths-inch gap at trim, up from a quarter inch. In hard cold, cuts go slowly so the vinyl does not chip or crack. The wider gap leaves the panels room to grow when summer comes.
How do I clean vinyl siding?
Rain does a lot of the work, and a garden hose handles most dirt. For more, use a soft, long-handled car-wash brush. The installation manual warns that stiff bristles or abrasive cleaners can make the siding look splotchy.
