What is fiber cement siding?

Fiber cement siding is a hard, heavy board. James Hardie lists four ingredients: Portland cement, sand, water and cellulose fibers. Most of it goes up as lap siding, with each board overlapping the one below. The lap boards come in 12-foot lengths, and panels and trim are made of fiber cement too.

The maker calls fiber cement noncombustible. It says the board will not ignite in a direct flame or add fuel to a fire. The maker's guide warns that edges and corners can break, so it says to carry each board on its edge.

Why James Hardie siding suits South Jersey weather

Siding in South Jersey sees a lot of wet weather. NOAA climate normals for nearby weather stations show about 47 to 48 inches of rain and melted snow a year. The state climatologist at Rutgers says nor'easters come most often from October to April. They bring strong winds and heavy rains, and a winter rarely passes without one.

New Jersey's building code rates the state's risk of weathering damage as severe. It rates the termite risk as moderate to heavy. James Hardie says fiber cement is made to withstand moisture and rot. The maker also calls it unappealing to termites and woodpeckers.

James Hardie sorts its siding into two climate lines. Its ZIP code chart puts all of New Jersey in one of them. That line is made for freezing temperatures with snow and ice. The maker added a drip edge to the lap boards in that line for better water management.

How fiber cement siding is cut and fastened

Cutting fiber cement makes dust that contains crystalline silica. OSHA's silica rule for construction has a line for saws that cut fiber cement board. Its control for that task is outdoor work, with a dust collection system on the saw. Indoors, the maker's guide rules out power saws and calls for shears or score and snap.

The guide calls for corrosion-resistant nails, galvanized or stainless steel. Blind nailing is its preferred method, with each nail hidden under at least 1 1/4 inches of overlap. Face nailing through the front of the board is for cases like high-wind areas where code calls for it. Each nail head should sit snug on the board, never driven in too deep.

A water-resistive barrier goes on the wall behind the siding, as the maker's guide and the building code require. Board ends meet in moderate contact over joint flashing, the joint treatment the maker recommends. The guide says to store boards flat and under cover before they go up. Boards hung wet can shrink at the joints.

FAQ

Fiber Cement Siding Questions, Answered

Common questions about fiber cement siding around Clayton and the rest of South Jersey. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (856) 449-4674

Is James Hardie siding the same as fiber cement siding?
James Hardie is a maker of fiber cement siding. Fiber cement is the material, and James Hardie is the brand. It is the fiber cement brand we install.
How much does fiber cement siding cost?
The size of your house and its number of stories drive most of the price. Removing old siding and repairing the wall behind it add to the job. We look at the house, then email you a detailed free estimate. Our New Jersey siding cost guide lays out market numbers.
Is fiber cement siding better than vinyl siding?
It depends on the house and what you want from it. Vinyl siding is light and comes in its finished color. Fiber cement is heavier, and it comes primed for paint or factory finished. At the estimate, we go over both and help you choose.
Should I choose primed or factory-finished fiber cement?
Primed boards get painted the color you pick after they go up. The maker's guide calls for paint within 180 days and recommends a 100 percent acrylic topcoat. A factory finish is applied and oven-baked before the boards ship. Touch-ups on those boards use the maker's own kit.
Do I need a permit for fiber cement siding in New Jersey?
On a one- or two-family home, the state's Uniform Construction Code treats siding repair or replacement as ordinary maintenance. That means no permit and no notice to the town. The rule's one siding exception is polypropylene siding. For larger buildings, ask the township construction office.
Can a few damaged fiber cement boards be replaced?
Often, yes. A cracked or broken board can come out, and a new one goes in its place. When we look at the wall, we tell you how many boards should come out. On a factory finish, the maker says a large damaged area gets new boards instead of touch-up.
