What is a cedar shake roof?

A cedar shake roof is covered in thick pieces of cedar called shakes. Handsplit shakes have a split face and a sawn back. Tapersawn shakes are sawn on both sides, which gives them a smoother, more even look.

Cedar shingles are thinner than shakes and sawn smooth on both sides. Shakes are thicker and have a heavier texture on the roof.

The top grades of shakes are cut from clear heartwood, mostly with vertical grain. Heartwood resists decay better than sapwood. Vertical grain is less likely to warp or split. Cedar also holds natural compounds that help it fight decay.

How a cedar shake roof is installed

The cedar industry's installation manual recommends a roof pitch of at least 4 in 12 for shakes. Flatter roofs, down to 3 in 12, need a special method on a solid deck. A strip of felt goes between each course of shakes. It blocks wind-driven snow and pushes water back out to the surface.

Each shake gets two nails, set about 3/4 inch from the edges. The next row of shakes covers those nails. Stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanized nails hold up against rust. Shakes sit 3/8 to 5/8 inch apart, which gives the wood room to swell when it gets wet.

Metal flashing lines the valleys and the spots where the roof meets a wall or chimney. The manual says most roof leaks start at those spots. Vents under the eaves and at the ridge move air through the attic. That air lets the back of each shake dry.

Cedar shake roof repair and care in South Jersey

Pine and oak forests cover much of the interior of South Jersey, the state climate office notes. Leaves and needles that pile up on a cedar roof hold water against the wood. Moss traps water the same way, and trapped water speeds up decay.

The cedar industry's care guide says to keep branches trimmed back from the roof. It calls for cleaning gutters and downspouts in the spring and fall. A downspout should never drain onto a lower roof. Zinc or copper strips at the ridge help hold back moss as rain washes over them.

As a cedar roof ages, some shakes split or curl and need replacing. Cedar can be repaired one piece at a time, and prompt repairs help the roof last longer. Old shakes turn brittle, and walking on them can crack them and lead to leaks. Our roof repair service also covers leaks on asphalt shingle and flat roofs.

FAQ

Cedar Shake Roofing Questions, Answered

Common questions about cedar shake roofing around Clayton and the rest of South Jersey. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (856) 449-4674

How long does a cedar shake roof last?
More than 30 years, says the federal Forest Products Laboratory, when the roof is installed and kept up well. Higher grades last longer, and thicker shakes are less likely to warp. Moss and piled-up leaves shorten the life of any cedar roof.
How much does a cedar shake roof cost?
The size and pitch of the roof drive most of the price. The grade and thickness of the shakes matter too, along with tear-off and any deck repairs. We look at the roof, then email you a free written estimate with the work and the price. Financing is available on request.
Can a new roof go over my old cedar shakes?
No. New Jersey's construction code says an old wood shake roof must come off before a new roof covering goes on. So a cedar shake roof replacement starts with a full tear-off. Then we check the roof deck before anything new goes down.
Can I switch from cedar shakes to asphalt shingles?
Yes. Cedar shakes often sit on spaced boards, the traditional base for a wood roof. Asphalt shingles need a solid deck, so a switch usually means new sheathing first. Our roof replacement page covers that work, and metal roofing is another choice.
Do I need a permit to replace a cedar shake roof in New Jersey?
Not on a detached one- or two-family home. The state's Uniform Construction Code lists roof covering repair and replacement on those homes as ordinary maintenance. That means no permit and no notice to the town. For a townhouse or an apartment building, the township construction office answers that question.
Should I pressure wash or seal my cedar roof?
The cedar industry's care guide does not recommend power washing, because it can badly damage a roof. In the wrong hands, a power washer strips off wood fiber and shortens the roof's life. The same guide warns against sealants and waterproofers on cedar. Cedar resists decay on its own, so a finish is optional.
