Door installation and repair for South Jersey homes

DRK Roofing and Siding installs and replaces exterior doors for homes in Clayton and across South Jersey. That means front entry doors, patio doors, sliding glass doors, storm doors and screen doors. We also repair doors that stick or let in drafts, and we install doors in new construction. Our door work is all on the outside of the house, so interior doors are not part of it.

Clayton sits at the center of our service area. Call or text (856) 449-4674, and our team will come out to look at the door and its frame. Then we email you a detailed free estimate with the recommended work and the price. If your windows are worn too, ask about replacement windows, and one visit can cover both.

What fails on an exterior door in South Jersey?

Water is hard on an exterior door. By NOAA's numbers, rain and melted snow here average about 47 to 48 inches a year. Rain that runs down a door collects at the sill and the bottom of the frame. A wood frame can turn soft and rot there, and then the door no longer seals tight.

Drafts and sticking doors are the other common complaints. Weatherstripping flattens and cracks with use. A door that sags on its hinges can rub the frame or stop latching. Fog between two panes of glass means the seal in that glass has failed.

Some of this is a repair. New weatherstripping or a hinge adjustment can fix many drafty or sticking doors. When the frame is rotted or the door is warped, replacement is usually the better call. At the estimate, we tell you which way makes more sense.

What happens during entry door installation

Many replacement entry doors come prehung. That means the door is already hung in its own frame, with the sill attached. The old door and frame come out, and the new unit goes into the same opening. If the frame is sound, a new door alone, called a slab, can hang in the old frame.

A new door set on a rotted sill can let water back in, so the opening gets checked first. Flashing under the sill and along the sides steers water out of the wall. Then the frame is shimmed until it stands straight and square, so the door swings and latches right.

The gaps around the frame are sealed next, and trim covers the edges. The federal ENERGY STAR program warns that even the best doors can be drafty when they are installed poorly. If new siding is going on too, the door can be flashed into the new house wrap. Our work runs from the first inspection to the final cleanup.

Sliding glass door installation and storm doors

A sliding glass door has one panel that rolls on a track past a fixed panel. Worn rollers or a bent track make it drag, and the lock may stop catching. New rollers can fix a door that only drags. A leaking frame or fogged glass usually means a new door.

Hinged patio doors swing open like a front door, so they need clear space for the swing. Many sliding and patio doors open onto a deck, and we build and replace decks and railings too.

A storm door goes in front of an entry door and shields it from rain and snow. Many storm doors trade a glass panel for a screen in warm weather. On a back or side door, a screen door lets air in and keeps bugs out.

FAQ

Exterior Doors Questions, Answered

Common questions about exterior doors around Clayton and the rest of South Jersey. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (856) 449-4674

How much does it cost to replace an exterior door?
The kind of door and its material drive most of the price. Glass panels add to it, and so does any rot repair in the frame or sill. We look at the door and the opening, then email you a detailed free estimate. Financing is available on request.
Do I need a permit to replace an exterior door in New Jersey?
Usually not. New Jersey's Uniform Construction Code lists a door replaced in the same opening, storm doors included, as ordinary maintenance. That work needs no permit and no notice to the town. A new or wider opening falls outside the rule, so ask your township construction office about that work.
Is steel or fiberglass better for a front door?
Both are common picks for an entry door. Steel takes paint well, but a scratch down to bare metal can rust. Fiberglass resists dents, and many fiberglass doors have a wood-grain texture. At the estimate, we go over which kind suits your house.
Is a storm door a good idea for every front door?
Not always. Some door makers warn that storm door glass can trap heat against a front door in strong sun. For a porch with more than a few hours of direct sun a day, they advise skipping the storm door. Ask us about it at your estimate visit.
Do you install exterior doors in new construction?
Yes. Along with replacements, we install exterior doors in new construction. Builders and homeowners can call or text (856) 449-4674 about a project. We look at the job, then email you a detailed estimate.
Do you install exterior doors outside Clayton?
Yes. Our service area covers Gloucester County and Camden County, plus the Vineland side of Cumberland County. It also takes in the near side of Salem County and Burlington County. We take jobs across the river in Pennsylvania too.
