How Much Does New Siding Cost in New Jersey?

A national remodeling cost survey puts a vinyl siding replacement at $17,785 in the Philadelphia market. The same job in fiber cement comes to $22,409. Each figure covers 1,250 square feet of old siding torn off and replaced. The survey lists no New Jersey city, so these are its Philadelphia numbers, just across the Delaware River.

One national cost guide puts installed siding at $4 to $13 a square foot. Tearing off the old siding adds $0.70 to $2.00 a square foot. Those are published market numbers, not our price list. What siding replacement costs on your house depends on its walls and what sits under the old siding.

What does new siding cost in New Jersey?

Every year a national remodeling cost survey prices the same jobs in 119 U.S. markets. Its newest edition is from 2025. The siding jobs replace 1,250 square feet of old siding over a continuous house wrap, trim included.

2025 survey, 1,250 square feet replacedPhiladelphia marketMiddle Atlantic regionNational average
Vinyl siding$17,785$21,175$17,950
Fiber cement siding$22,409$25,666$21,485

In the Philadelphia market, fiber cement ran about $4,600 more than vinyl. The regional average sits higher than Philadelphia on both jobs.

Cost guides measure a different way. One guide built on more than 10,000 customer reports puts the typical siding job at $5,554 to $17,721. Its average is $11,588. Guide ranges blend jobs of every size, while the survey prices one defined job.

How do vinyl, fiber cement and wood siding compare?

The material you choose moves the price more than anything else, one national guide says. A cost calculator and two national guides publish these installed ranges per square foot.

SidingCost calculator, basic install (May 2026)Two national cost guidesLifespan in one guide
Vinyl$7.32 to $12.51$3 to $12 and $4 to $1230 to 40 years
Fiber cement$8.92 to $14.69$5 to $14 and $6 to $1550 to 75 years
Wood$10.46 to $16.40$1 to $15 and $5 to $1520 to 40 years

The calculator prices basic work under favorable site conditions. It treats tear-off as an add-on and leaves out sales tax. It adds 13 to 22 percent when a general contractor runs the job.

Vinyl siding carries the lowest calculator price of the three. One guide calls it low upkeep but warns it can fade in direct sun and crack where temperatures swing hard.

Fiber cement siding is the material in James Hardie siding. It costs more than vinyl, and the same guide gives it the longest life of the three.

Wood carries the highest calculator price and the shortest guide lifespan of the three. That guide puts steel, brick, stucco and stone at the top of the price range.

What drives the price of new siding?

Two houses with the same floor plan can draw very different siding quotes.

  • Wall area. Siding is priced by the square foot of wall. A two-story house carries far more wall than a ranch on the same footprint.
  • Stories and shape. One guide says multi-story homes cost more because the work needs scaffolding and safety gear. Dormers, gables and extra corners add cutting and fitting time.
  • Tear-off. Removing and hauling away old siding runs $0.70 to $2.00 a square foot in that guide. It also says to confirm your estimate includes it.
  • Sheathing. That guide lists rotted sheathing under the siding as a sign it is time to replace. Nobody sees it until the old siding comes off, so ask how a repair gets priced.
  • Trim and wrap. The survey jobs include trim and a continuous house wrap under the siding. Check that a quote lists both.
  • Siding grade. Thicker siding can cost up to twice as much as thin builder’s grade, one guide says.
  • Labor. Materials run 50 to 55 percent of a siding job and labor 45 to 50 percent, by that guide’s math.

If your windows are near the end, plan replacement windows before the siding goes on, so the trim is done once.

Does a permit add to the cost in New Jersey?

New Jersey’s Uniform Construction Code treats siding repair or replacement on one- and two-family homes as ordinary maintenance. Under N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.7, ordinary maintenance needs no permit and no inspection. The rule names polypropylene siding as an exception. Work that affects the structure or fire safety falls outside ordinary maintenance. The township construction office answers questions about a specific house.

How long does siding last in South Jersey weather?

New Jersey’s building code rates the risk of weathering damage across the state as severe. It rates termite risk as moderate to heavy. The termite rating matters most for wood siding close to the ground.

A home inspectors’ association chart gives longer lives than that cost guide. It puts vinyl siding at about 60 years and fiber cement at 100 or more. The same chart gives exterior paint 7 to 10 years. That matters for fiber cement and wood, since both carry a finish. One guide ranks fiber cement among the most durable sidings for harsh weather.

How should you compare two siding quotes?

Scope is the first thing to line up. A quote worth comparing spells out these items:

  • Tear-off and haul-away of the old siding
  • The siding material, profile and grade
  • House wrap, trim, soffit and fascia
  • How sheathing repairs get priced if they turn up
  • Cleanup at the end of the job

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to side a 2,000 square foot house?
One national cost guide puts a 2,000 square foot house at $8,000 to $26,000 installed. That range uses $4 to $13 a square foot, with tear-off extra. The stories and what sits under the old siding decide where a real house lands.
Is fiber cement worth the extra cost over vinyl?
In the survey's Philadelphia numbers, fiber cement cost about $4,600 more than vinyl on the same job. At resale it recouped about 109 percent of its cost, against 90 percent for vinyl. It also gets the longer life in the charts, though its painted finish needs care over time.
How much does siding repair cost compared with new siding?
One national guide puts siding repair at $2 to $14 a square foot, or $200 to $1,100 on average. It warns that new pieces may not match older, faded siding. Rotting boards, buckled panels and rotted sheathing are among the signs it lists for replacement.
Can new siding go over the old siding?
One national guide says it can work when the old siding is flat, tight and in good shape. Tear-off costs $0.70 to $2.00 a square foot by that guide's numbers. It also opens the wall to view, so rotted sheathing gets fixed before the new wrap goes on.
How long does vinyl siding last in South Jersey?
One cost guide gives vinyl 30 to 40 years, and a home inspectors' association chart says about 60. New Jersey's building code rates weathering damage across the state as severe. Fading, cracks and loose or buckled panels are the warning signs one guide lists.
Why do two siding quotes for the same house differ?
Scope is the first place to look. One quote may include tear-off, house wrap and new trim while another leaves them out. Siding grade matters too, since thicker siding can cost up to twice as much as thin builder's grade. Compare the totals once the scope matches.
