Rotted fascia and worn soffit, repaired or replaced

DRK Roofing and Siding handles soffit and fascia work for homes in Clayton and the rest of South Jersey. Fascia is the long board at the roof edge, and your gutters hang on it. Soffit is the panel under the overhang, and vented soffit lets air into the attic. We repair or replace both, and we cover wood fascia with aluminum capping.

This work can stand alone or go in with new siding or a roof replacement. Clayton sits at the center of our service area. Call or text (856) 449-4674, and our team will come to your home to evaluate the work. Then we email you a detailed free estimate.

Why do fascia boards rot?

A wood fascia board rots when it stays wet. Drip edge is the metal strip at the roof edge that steers rain into the gutter. When it is missing or bent, water runs behind the gutter and soaks the board. A clogged or sagging gutter can spill onto the board too.

On fascia without capping, paint is all that protects the wood. Once the paint peels, the wood soaks up rain and dries slowly. Peeling paint and soft spots along the roof edge are early signs of rot.

Soft wood holds nails poorly. A storm can tear a rotted board loose and take the gutters with it. We repair storm-damaged fascia, and new gutters can go up through our gutter installation service.

Fascia board replacement, capping and new soffit

When rot sits in one spot, fascia repair is often enough. We cut out the bad length of board and fit a new piece. When rot or peeling runs along most of the roof edge, fascia board replacement makes more sense. At the estimate visit, we tell you which one your house needs.

Aluminum fascia capping, also called fascia wrap, is metal bent to fit over the wood board. Rain and sun then hit the metal instead of the paint. Capping goes over sound wood, so soft boards get replaced first. On some jobs, the old capping and fascia boards come off, and new metal capping goes on.

Soffit panels come in vinyl or aluminum, in vented and solid styles. Capping and soffit come in many colors, and our jobs have used white, almond and black.

Soffit and fascia on older South Jersey homes

Plenty of South Jersey homes have some age on them. Census figures put the median year built at 1980 in Gloucester County and 1967 in Camden County. About half of Gloucester County homes and about seven in ten Camden County homes were built before 1980.

Rot can spread into the rafter tails, the ends of the roof framing that hold the fascia. Soft framing or roof deck gets repaired before any new trim goes on. On one roof tear-off, rotted wood ran all the way down to the fascia board. That section was reframed and newly sheeted before the new roof went on.

Paint on older trim has its own rule. The EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting rule covers paid work that disturbs paint in homes built before 1978. That work has to follow lead-safe work practices. Tearing off or cutting painted fascia disturbs that paint.

FAQ

Soffit and Fascia Questions, Answered

Common questions about soffit and fascia around Clayton and the rest of South Jersey. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (856) 449-4674

How much does soffit and fascia repair cost?
The price depends on how much soffit and fascia need work, and on repair versus full replacement. Rotted framing behind the boards adds to the job, and so does a high roof edge. The capping and soffit panels you choose play a part too. We look at the house, then email you a detailed free estimate.
Do I need a permit for soffit and fascia work in New Jersey?
New Jersey's Uniform Construction Code lists the repair, replacement or installation of exterior trim as ordinary maintenance. Ordinary maintenance needs no permit, no inspection and no notice to the town. Ordinary maintenance never includes work affecting structural safety, so framing repairs are a different question. Your town's construction office can tell you whether a framing repair needs a permit.
Can aluminum capping go over rotted fascia?
Capping belongs on sound wood. Metal over a soft board only hides the rot. We replace the rotted boards first, then the capping goes on.
Should I replace soffit and fascia with new siding or a new roof?
Doing them together often makes sense, since the trim sits where the roof meets the walls. Our jobs have paired new fascia and soffit with new siding, a new roof and new gutters. As a roofing contractor serving Clayton, we can replace the trim while the roof edge is open. Soffit and fascia work can also be done on its own.
What should I do if wind pulls my fascia loose?
From the ground, look for fascia pulled away from the roof edge or gutters hanging off the house. Call or text (856) 449-4674 and tell us what you see. Our team will come to your home to evaluate the work. If shingles came off too, roof repair covers that part.
What is the difference between vented and solid soffit?
Vented soffit has small openings that let outside air into the attic at the eaves. That air rises and leaves through vents up high, at the ridge or in the gables. Solid soffit has no openings. Which one goes where depends on how your attic is vented, and we go over that at the estimate visit.
